Old Eyes ... Joyful
This morning as I climbed out of bed and went in to brush my teeth, I stopped for a millisecond and looked into the mirror and saw ‘old eyes’.
Granted, not these in the photo above, but something more joyful.
"He who is of a calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition, youth and age are equally a burden." Plato (427-346 B.C.)
Growing older is something we do from the day we are born. As I have climbed in years and been around more “older” people my own age and up, I know one thing… I do not want to be a grumpy old person. Have you noticed how much tension comes with grumpy people? You cannot do anything to please them. I try to reframe them to be simply unhappy inside, and most likely unhappy with themselves.
"Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be." Robert Browning (1812-1889)
Did you know that God threatens bad things to those who grumble? Psalm 106: 25-26 “They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the Lord. So he swore to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the wilderness,” For the complainers and fault finders, he promises the same thing. Philippians 2:14-15 “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.”
I want to do that! I want to shine in old age… to be a beacon of God’s love and forgiving mercy. I know the Lord will not forsake me. Even as the years progress, my hair will turn snow white- not there yet, my posture will slowly diminish, and my strength will be weakened… but my passion and love for the Lord will be stronger than ever. Psalm 71 covers it all well, verse 9: “ Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.” Verse 18 “Even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me”
Through out life, His words have sustained me, strengthened me, given me hope when I felt despair or fear, and I have learned my pain, struggles and troubles, they are a gift he uses to strengthen me and make me a better person.
Find the best you can around you and focus on it no matter what your age. Be the smile in the room, the heart that gives when there is need.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD your God, he it is that does go with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6
